How to Improve Your Android Phone's Battery Life

Since the release of Apple Pie in August, it's caused issues with the battery life. There are Android phones that perform better than others, but they might not be an option for those who can't afford to upgrade.

There are several Android hacks that can extend your phone's battery life. Disabling always active mobile data and using dark mode can create a drastic change in battery life, including some of the additional tips below.

Disable Always Active Mobile Data

Disabling your phone's mobile data can greatly improve its battery life. You may even double your phone's screen on time (SoT), which is different from battery life. Screen on time is a measurement of how often you use your screen. It's the length of time your phone is “on” every time you unlock your screen.

Doubling your phone's SoT can greatly improve your phone's battery life, but these other battery-saving tips can help as well. First, let's focus on disabling the always active mobile data in your phone. Go to Settings > System > About phone. Scroll down until you see the Build number.

Tap it on it until you see a notification that reads your phone is now in dev mode. Go back to Settings > System and scroll down to tap on the Developer options tab. Scroll down to the Networking tab and look for “Mobile data always active.” Move the slider over so that it's set to “off.”

The always active mobile data is finally disabled. If you want to disable dev mode, tap on the slider, which will turn it off. You need to be in developer mode if you ever wish to turn it back on.

Use Android's Dark Mode

During the 2018 Android Dev Summit on Friday, Nov. 9, Google revealed that dark mode also improves the battery life on your phone. Dark mode, or night mode, will lower how much battery life your phone uses. The colors on your screen will also be pleasing on your eyes, especially at night.

If you want to save your phone's battery life, you can turn on dark mode to use less white light or blue light. To switch over to dark mode, go to Settings > Display. Tap on Advanced and scroll down until you locate your device name. Tap on it followed by Dark Mode. This can also help resolve Android Pie's battery life problem.

Other Battery-Saving Tips

There are plenty of methods to tackle this pesky problem. Some of the most common methods include:

  • Charging your phone to 100%
  • Setting your display to 200cd/m2 brightness
  • Running several tests until the battery life is improved
  • Repeating these steps until it works

But these steps are often recommended for Android novices. Though it's a straightforward process to improve your phone's battery life, it can be time-consuming and frustrating if you don't know what you're doing. Here are some quick ways you can extend the battery life on your Android phone:

  • Reduce the brightness from the settings in your notifications tab.
  • Use your phone's volume buttons to place your phone on mute.
  • Turn on Adaptive Battery feature in Settings > Battery, and it will automatically limit battery usage for some of your apps that aren't always in use like your spyware for Android.
  • Use Battery Saver mode by going to Settings > Battery, and turn it on.
  • Use Airplane mode for when you don't need to use Wi-Fi, mobile networks, or Bluetooth connection.
  • Use wired earphones instead of Bluetooth connection when possible.

If none of these tips help, here are the best Android phones in terms of battery life and speed:

  • Huawei P20 Pro
  • Oppo R17 Pro
  • Vivo V11 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9
  • Xiaomi Mi 8
  • OnePlus 6T
  • Xiaomi Black Shark
  • Vivo Nex
  • Xiaomi Pocophone
