Unveiling The Mystery Behind Find My iPhone's Last Location Feature

Lost your iPhone? Well, it can be a pretty scary experience, but we promise you that not all hope is lost.

Apple understands that people misplace things, especially their phones. After all, most of us carry our phones everywhere we go. Therefore, they have designed a feature that allows you to know exactly where your iPhone last was - Last Location.

On this page, we’re going to tell you exactly how Last Location works, and why you should be using it, or one of the alternatives, for tracking down your lost iPhone.

Understanding the Importance of Last Location

As the name suggests, Last Location is a feature that allows you to determine exactly where your iPhone last was. So, if you lose your iPhone, you can open up the last location and page and know exactly where the phone was when it was last turned on.

Looking at this information will tell you whether your phone is lost (e.g. if the phone is stationary), or if your iPhone has potentially been stolen (e.g. if it is on the move). This will let you determine what to do next.

Navigating Find My iPhone for Last Location Details

So, you’ve lost your iPhone and want to track it down. What do you do? Well, there are two options here:

  1. Use another one of your Apple devices (must be connected to the same Apple ID) and use the ‘Find My’ app.
  2. Use the https://www.icloud.com/find website and sign in to your Apple ID.

Both work in exactly the same way. You load it up, tap your device, and it’ll tell you the last location that the device was switched on. You’ll see the location on an incredibly accurate map (this is all done via GPS), which makes your life a whole lot easier.

It really is that simple! Although, once again, you need to remember that it is only going to show you the last location from when your iPhone was turned on. So, if somebody switched the iPhone off, or the battery has died, then you won’t get an accurate location for it. Although, that is incredibly rare.

Strategies for Retrieving Your iPhone Based on the Last Known Location

Know where your iPhone is? Well, it is time to retrieve it! Most of the time, it is easy to do. Just head to wherever the phone is and grab it. If you have left it in an Uber or something, then find some way to get in touch with the driver. Again, simple.

If you have headed to the location where you believe your iPhone last was and you cannot find it, then open up the ‘Find My’ app, or the Apple website that we mentioned before. From here, you can ask the iPhone to ‘ring’ for you. It will make it a whole lot easier to track down!

If you believe your iPhone has been stolen, don’t try and retrieve it yourself. Instead, talk to the police. They’ll be able to walk you through the next steps.

Using Google Maps Timeline Feature

If you have connected your iPhone to your Google account, then you may find your location history has been saved to Google Maps. For the most part, it works the same as the ‘Find My’ feature on the iPhone/iPad, etc. You just need to head to https://timeline.google.com/maps/.

The Google Maps timeline feature will give you a lot more information than Apple does. For example, you can see the exact route that your iPhone has followed if you believe it to be stolen. Basically, as long as the battery hasn’t drained, you’ll know where your iPhone is at all times.

Use Family Locator Apps

We highly recommend that you use a family locator app. These are a little bit easier to use than both the Last Location and Google Maps feature. They also offer a lot more features for keeping tabs on your phone (and the location of your family member’s phones).

Our favorite app is Family Orbit. In Family Orbit, you can keep tabs on the last location for multiple Apple IDs. It is dead simple to use, and you can install it on any phone (once you have a Family Orbit account). This app will also let you check for any usage of your phone, which should give you more information about whether it has been lost or stolen.

Conclusion

Apple provides a variety of tools for keeping tabs on lost or stolen iPhones. Their main feature is the ‘Find My’ feature which will list your last location either online or on another Apple device connected to your Apple ID. You can do the same through Google Maps. We do recommend the Family Orbit app if you want to make your life a little easier, though.
